Abigail Signs

I have always been intrigued with American Sign Language. I took a class at BYU and absolutely fell in love with the language. If I hadn’t taken this class towards the close of my education I would have pursued this passion of mine even further. I knew that I wanted to teach my children ASL even before I had children and even before I was married for that matter. I taught Spencer ASL and he still occasionally signs. I am now teaching Abigail to use ASL.
My teaching strategy is basically teach by example. I sign to them as I say the words, and more importantly I sign certain words in the appropriate setting. For example, I have been signing “milk” every time Abigail drinks milk, breast milk and now whole milk. I also use signs pertaining to food while she is eating in her high chair. I have been using ASL with Abigail since a very early age, basically since she started taking an interest in her surroundings. She has been signing back to us for many months now. Her first sign was, “milk”. She is now signing to ask for things, such as milk and to eat. It’s really the cutest thing to see her little hands sign. Today I finally captured her signing on video, it can be a tricky thing capturing such moments.

Abigail signs: "Milk", "Eat", "All Done", "More", and she made up her own sign to indicate she wants her blanket.

Abigail says: "Dadda," (indicating both Brady and Spencer), "Momma," "All Done," "Car," "Ball," "Cookie," "Cracker," "Night Night," "Love You," and "No." Of course I would need to be her interpreter if you heard her say most of these words.

The following video is very short. Abigail is asking to eat by signing the word "Eat."
